ℐ𝓃𝓈𝓉𝒶𝓁𝓁𝒶𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃

This ongoing performance series began during my residency at outsideininsideout. At that time I created an interactive installation set in a charred forest reconstructed through 3D scanning. White noise covers the entire environment, erasing natural sound so that hearing becomes indistinct, like the echo of a memory. Light, as a material and shaping presence, takes the lead; modeled on real-world light fields, it resets perceptual order and opens a concurrent inquiry into vision and sound. The work premiered in Germany at Gallery Torhaus Wehlen (17 August 2024) and Slug Gallery, Leipzig (23 August 2024).

Since then, the installation has evolved into a toolkit for live visual performance, combining Unreal Engine with live sound and bodily movement. Early iterations were presented in Berlin, including Chant of the Eclipse (5 October 2024, Studio.db), Snakes and Ladders (8 November 2024, Kunsthaus Kule), and Dock Digital (19 December 2024). As the series developed, I integrated a Max/MSP audio system and gradually built a narrative structure in which body, sound, and image are inseparable. This approach became central in works such as Boundary Condition (St James Garlickhythe, London; 22 February and 8 August 2025), and an(8)x ghost festival (Berlin, 2025), where light, sound, and movement intertwine to form a more complete dramaturgy.

How the avatar is formed: In this scene where optical order is reset, I enter as a “monster”. The exterior is aggressive; the core is grief. It has no affiliation and moves between the visible and the invisible. It is a perceptual agent that responds to light intensity, noise thresholds, virtual light mapping, and the granularity of voice. In strong light the body recedes to the edges; in darkness distortion is illuminated. Pulled by broken memory, and between ruptured language and unstable identity, the body remains incomplete and repeatedly reassembles itself from soil, history, and residue under the drive of desire. Existence is therefore not seamless but pieced together by fissures; instability is its form. This logic aligns with the mechanism of light as the leading medium: light is a technical parameter and a driver of narrative dynamics. Reference image: In Painted Skin, the disguise of “skin as face” blurs the boundaries between true and false, surface and essence, human and nonhuman. This ambiguity extends to my performer persona: anger, memory, and desire are juxtaposed, migrating and translating between narrative and body along the paths of light and sound.

This performance felt like the night when my Outsidein friends and I buried the kimchi jar deep in the Saxon Switzerland forest. Microorganisms ferment endlessly through time and space, and I sense that in another distant time, those traces will be reactivated. I felt the subtle shifts of fermentation, the dampness of the soil, and the stillness of the forest, as if I could perceive the electromagnetic signals from the future. In this moment, only what lies beneath the light remains visible. Light interweaves a new visual and sonic narrative, while everything else drifts and transforms in the unknown.

In the collaboration between XI-N and Song Xin, darkness is a void, while light intrudes upon it. From their clash, shadows arise, becoming a hidden language and a tangible form of imagination. This opposition and fusion span the boundaries of the real and the virtual, the physical and the digital, and extend to the edge of existence and creation. From this, a world emerges— one suspended between reality and illusion, filled with fragmented perceptions and reconstructions.
